Activity 2: Geography of China

Objectives/Goal: On one map, the students will label the countries that border China and the major physical features of Asia and China. On another map, the students will label rivers and major cities of Ancient China.

Present information for students to understand where China is located. Show examples of physical and political maps of China.

Materials:

Outline maps of Asia and China, colored pencils

Students will find examples of maps in the Atlas section of their textbook, in the Chapter about China, or maps from the internet.

Procedure:
  • Review the 7 continents and stop at Asia. Distribute the map of Asia and find China. Have students color in China with a light color to help them focus on it.
  • Discuss the idea of neighboring countries and allow the students to label the map with the countries that surround China.
  • Discuss the physical features of Asia and have students label them on the map. (Stress the Himalayan Mountains, the 3 main rivers in China, and the Pacific Ocean.)
  • Review the political divisions of China. Distribute the map of China. Have students label China's important cities. (Stress the location of cities that are located by the rivers and coast.)

This geographic information should help the students understand why the early dynasties developed where they did.
